The Transformative Trajectories of Indian Higher Education: A Critical Exploration of Challenges, Reforms, and Future Directions

Higher education stands as a cornerstone of national achievement, reflecting societal values and fueling both social and economic progress. It transforms ignorance into knowledge and propels communities from stagnation to advancement. As the world changes rapidly, educational systems must evolve in tandem. In India, higher education grapples with formidable obstacles such as commercialisation, the gap between quantity and quality, and rising graduate unemployment. These challenges threaten the very fabric of the system and call for sweeping reforms. To meet the demands of tomorrow, we need bold, innovative approaches to organise knowledge, solve new problems, and prepare society for what lies ahead. Breakthroughs in communication technology have already begun to dissolve barriers of time and distance. This paper explores why weaving value-based scientific thinking into Indian higher education is essential for meeting the needs of the future.
